Spread over an area of 932 sq. km, the Chitwan National Park was recognized by UNESCO as Natural Heritage Site on 1979. The name Chitwan translates to “the heart of the jungle” in English and Chitwan stays true to its name, i.e. it is right in the middle of vast deciduous forest, home to many flora, fauna and wildlife. Irrigated by three rivers, Narayani, Rapti and Reu, Chitwan has vast food plains apart from dense jungle.

Chitwan National Park is home to some of the most endangered animals in the world. The park is a natural habitat for Asian one-horned rhinoceros, elephants and Bengal tigers among others. Also found in the park are crocodiles, python, deer, rhesus monkey, langur, leopard and wild cats. Apart from that, the wetland of Chitwan National Park attracts numerous birds from around the world, including some rare and endangered ones, making the park a perfect location for bird watching in Nepal.

Trip Highlights
  • Chitwan National Park established in 1973 and later designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. It is the oldest national park and one of the largest in Nepal, covering an area of 932 square kilometers. It is recognized for its biodiversity and successful preservation efforts of the endangered species within the park, notably the one-horned rhinoceros and Bengal tiger.
  • Wildlife Diversity: A wide variety of animal species call the park home, thanks to the different plant habitats that is found here, such as: marsh, grasslands, dense Sal forests, and riverine forets. It includes the critically endangered one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tiger, leopard, Asian elephant, sloth bear, deer, gharial crocodile, and more than 500 variety of birds species.
  • Tharu Indigenous People: The indigenous Tharu people have been an integral part of Chitwan for centuries. As such, their connection with nature and culture depicted through their customs, arts, cuisine and lifestyle are an integral part of Chitwan visit.
  • Haven for Wildlife Safari: Chitwan National Park offers its visitors various safari tour options to get closer to wildlife in their natural habitat and also the local inhabitants. Jungle Safari (Jeep, Elephant back or on foot), Bird watching, Village tour, Canoeing, Nature walks wherein the visitor is accompanied by a guide who explains about the local flora and fauna, helps identify animal tracks and shares information about the ecosystem, Elephant breeding center visit, Gharial breeding center visits.
